Meng Zhi was totally prepared to fight the emperor to save Jingyan. Discuss. 

Actually, you know what I like best about this scene? That Lin Shu does /nothing/. Says nothing, does not intervene, does not even look like he’s thinking or planning or anything that he’s spent the entire last 45 episodes doing constantly. He looks disgusted, albeit unsurprised, by the Emperor losing his shit and threatening to off /yet another/ of his sons. But he doesn’t do anything at all to affect what’s happening.

After 45 freaking episodes, I think he’s finally made his way back around to trusting Jingyan to take whatever action is needed, again.

(And if you think this is why I absolutely had to write 60K words of after-story wherein Lin Shu actually lives, you would be 100% correct. *hearts all over them*)

It’s not just trusting Jingyan, it’s also recognizing that this is a place where he can’t help Jingyan, either. Lin Shu spent twelve years plotting and preparing, while Jingyan waffled in frustration over what he didn’t know — and wouldn’t or couldn’t investigate — and it’s time for Jingyan to be the one to push the point. At every point before this, it got more and more dangerous for Jingyan, but there was always that one small out, if he chose to take it: to sacrifice Lin Shu. This is the point where there’s no longer any out for him, and no going back, to be directly threatened. 

So, yeah, Lin Shu had to stand back and simply watch. 

Hu Ge plays Lin Shu with such subtlety and restraint, and Ding Yongdai brings vulnerability and depth to what could’ve been another blustering, arrogant, emperor, and Wang Kai layers regret and grief with gravitas. Honestly, there’s not a note out of place in the entire scene, and I can’t think of three other actors with such variety in experience and strengths who could’ve pulled off such a tense, pivotal scene half so well.
